Becoming a Special Education teacher?

Daria Verfaillie: It's not about how well you do at school, it's about how well you can/or can't handle situations that can occur in the blink of an eye.I'm an assistant teacher at a special needs school and it's not easy work, not at all. You have to have incredible patience and tolerability, and there are times I don't think I can handle it. You have to remain calm when dealing with them at ALL TIMES, because they don't react well to panic or anger. You aren't going to have just autistic kids to deal with, you're going to have kids with down syndrome, ones who can't talk or communicate, ones whose only ways of communication are through sign language, ones who have extreme anger issues, ones who have extreme attachment issues etc etc.You need to go to university either way and do a course for it, but I'd suggest you look into volunteer work to see if you're cut out for it....Show more
