Selling a car to a dealership?

Adan Stribble: CarMax is probably the only legit place to sell your car. A regular car dealer won't buy it unless they have a buyer for it or can get it super cheap.Do you have the title or are you still making payments? First thing I suggest is call your bank and get a payoff (if you are making payments). That way you will know exactly what it will cost to pay off your loan.Next, go to CarMax and get the car appraised. They will give you an offer in writing (who else will do that?) and you can decide if you want to sell it or not.Bring your title and registration with you to CarMax if you want to sell. They will process a check for you in 15-20 minutes. If you still owe money on the car, they will give you a check if you have positive equity, or you will have to pay to get out of the car if you have negative equity....Show more

Azalee Ahrendes: Large dealerships don't buy cars like that. They won't be interested in your car and you'd be wasting your time. ! Take it to a smaller independent dealer with an inventory of cars similar to yours. Or take it to Carmax.Expect to get anywhere from wholesale minus 10% up to Wholesale minus 25% for your car. I would also search for consignment dealers. These are dealers who will sell the car for you and take a commission after the sale. You still own the car until it sells....Show more
