give details of first wide body aircraft and who manufacture it and in which year it come into service?

Denna Prudente: Actually, I will disgree with the previous answer, as far as jets are concerned. The Boeing 707 was in the works as early as 1954 and first flew in commercial service (for PanAm) in 1957. More than 800 have been built and more than 130 are still in service today (mostly in freight operations). Maximum seating in the largest version allowed for 219 passengers. Back in the 50's, the 707 was the largest plane around. I think it beat out the 747 by a large margin, primarily because the 747 wasn't first flown until 1966....Show more

Talisha Digrande: Yes, the 747 was the first commercial wide body aircraft. Boeing lost the military contract for a heavy lift aircraft to Lockheed with the C5A. So here Boeing was stuck with this large aircraft that they spent all this research & development money on. Since they are in the business of producing passenger aircraft, they took this design and modified it. They moved the wings from on top of the fusilage to t! he bottom and converted the tail from a "T" to the conventional style. This made the aircraft a more acceptable configuration for commercial aircraft. Thus creating the first wide body aircraft....Show more

Elbert Donatelli: By definition, a WIDEBODY aircraft is one with TWIN AISLES so a 707 cannot fit that description. The first widebody, twin aisle airliner was indeed the Boeing 747 which first flew on February 9th 1969. (Not 1966.)The first commercial flight involving the Boeing 747 took place on January 21, 1970 operated by Pan Am between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and London Heathrow Airport. Re: your question about low cost airlines, that really should be it's own question but you will find some good information about that topic in this document: "Impact of Low Cost Airlines: Summary of Mercer Study" at this link-http://www.mercermc.com/Perspectives/Specialty/MOT......Show more

Monroe Rainey: Large airliners were manufactured even in! the 1940s (e.g. the Stratocruiser) but the first true wide bo! dy airliner is said to be the Boeing 747 (came into service in 1970). The first customer was Pan Am. Next came the DC10 and the Tristar.
