Is origami considered art? Why?

Gladys Worthing: I teach origami in an elementary school as a way of explaining the difference between shape and form. If you believe that using a media in a pattern that has been created by another is not art, then by that definition, no I believe it is a craft. But many of my students take that foundation and go on to create original 3-D forms out of paper. Origami creates an opportunity for that discovery to happen. Also, teaching the history and craftmanship behind origami creates thinking process that is useful in all art forms....Show more

Jefferson Sarson: It's debatable, based off your definition of art. I see art as "Creating or modifying something to be aesthetically pleasing", so here, it's a definite yes.

Rebeca Mckin: Yes of course :) Art is creating something. And as William Plomer said "Creativity is the power to connect the seemingly unconnected."Origami is taking paper and changing it into forms that would usually seem unrelated to paper. So y! eah i would definitely call it art :)

Patricia Dornbos: Yes. Origami is a Japanese art of folding paper.
